New risk assessments can be created for Hazards. This is done when creating a new RAMs document, within step 2.
First, find the hazard which needs the new risk assessment. A search bar is available at the top of the hazard group list to help with finding hazards. Alternatively, the hazard can be found by manually searching through each of the hazard groups.
Each hazard has an “actions” button on the right-hand side. Selecting this will load an actions menu. To create a new risk assessment for a hazard, tick the box to the left of the hazards name and then select the actions button. From the menu which appears, select “Assess Risk”.
This will load the risk assessments currently linked to the hazard. To create a new risk assessment, select the “Create new risk assessment” button at the top right.
A blank risk assessment template will appear with the following mandatory fields:
- Hazard Description
- Persons at risk (drop-down menu)
- Risk Rating (matrix grid)
Whilst not mandatory the following fields should also be complete:
- “Risk of”
- “Control measures”
- Residual Risk (matrix grid)
The persons at risk drop-down menu contains types of persons. If the defaults do not apply, more can be added by selecting the “Other” option.
Once “other” has been selected, an additional text field will appear where the “Person at Risk” value can be added. Enter the persons a risk “type”. Then to add them to the Risk Assessment, select the plus button.
Both the “risk rating” and “residual risk” can have their numerical value chosen from a table. To view this grid/table, select the rating value.
The rating grid/table will then appear. Change the rating by selecting the correct value from the coloured boxes. The format is “Likelihood of injury” x “Severity of injury” = Rating
For example, If this risk is unlikely (2) to happen but would cause a 1-7 day absence from work (3) if it occurred, the rating would be set to 6 (2 x 3).
After entering the risks, the control measures in place to prevent/mitigate the risks and the residual rating now the control measures are in place, the risk assessment is ready to be saved. To add the risk assessment to the database, select the “Continue” button.
The new risk assessment is now visible on the risk assessment template page.
NOTE: The system will have selected the new Risk Assessment by default. Please “untick” any risk assessment which is not required for the hazard before continuing.
To complete the setup and return to the hazard groups and hazard listings, select “Save and exit” at the bottom right.
